The best food is what’s grown local to you! Come celebrate fresh, locally grown food and community at our NEW Upcountry Farmer’s Market located at the Kulamalu Town Center Hwy. 37 near Long’s Drugs, Pukalani/Kula. We are behind the football field on Saturdays, 7am – 12pm.
The Upcountry Farmers Market has been operating on Maui first at St. Joseph’s Church over 30yrs ago. The Upcountry Farmers Market moved after a few years to the Eddie Tam Gymnasium in Makawao town and existed there for approximately the last 30yrs. Value added food products were a vital part of the market. Unfortunately there was an incident of food poisoning and the market was shut down. It re-opened with restrictions, rules and regulations. The market vendors dwindled to only a few maybe 3 regulars and 2 or 3 occasional and with even fewer customers. This was about 7 years ago when the acting manager was leaving and told me that I was the new manager by default. I did not know what responsibilities came with that but soon found out.
In order for the market to continue I had to comply with many requests by the County of Maui in order to keep it running. The County of Maui has graciously allowed and supported the market through our ever expanding evolution over the years and assisted all of us with a mutually beneficial solution to our outgrowing the market location with a whopping 60 vendors. Yes we will be allowed value added goods again. The value added goods will have to come from the farmer and use the produce from ones farm on Maui. As of the 26th of June 2010 we have been freely given 100 spaces in Kulamalu Town Center by Everette Dowling, and the Dowling Company. There has been a tremendous amount of work that has gone into this and many thanks are due to so many.
We wish to thank Mayor Tavares, The County of Maui Parks and Recreation Dept., Everette Dowling and staff, Council woman Gladys Baisa, Clark Hashimoto, Rep. Kyle Yamshita, The County Planning Dept., Island Signs and countless others who have donated their time to make this a great community event.
Saturdays 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Come early for the best picking!

The Warriors of Hawaii
In ancient Hawaii, as in most indigenous cultures, men were expected to have both a warrior presence as well as a peaceful presence (at peace within themselves). A warrior who was at peace within himself was the master at balancing “power and harmony”. In spiritual practices, that balance is the most powerful force in the universe. Warriors were considered very attractive by women, and were potential candidates to become chief. They were referred to as “nakoa.” Nakoa were the gatherers and protectors of the women, children, and elders.
The best warriors were selected for advance training called “Lua.” They were experts in the fighting arts, but, more importantly, they were practitioners in the physical and spiritual healing arts. Their mere presence brought fear to potential troublemakers even without them saying a word or lifting a hand. Yet their peaceful presence and charisma brought a sense of well-being and security to all people.
At the present time, lua training is available to native Hawaiians only, and is done in secret. Few Hawaiians have the privilege of being invited to learn the art, and only a few last beyond the initial training.
The most respected and highly skilled lua warriors become the leaders and teachers. They are known as the “olohe.” Olohe are selected by other olohe, and their mastery in all aspects of Hawaiian warrior arts, culture, healing, and spirituality is superb. There are less than 15 known legitimate olohe alive today.
Published reports and books refer to Kahu Naone as a recognized olohe. He is a teacher in the basic training of lua warriors throughout Hawai’i. Kahu is also an expert in the different parts of the body, and is the principal herbal and spiritual healing teacher for lua warriors. His knowledge of warrior weaponry and their application in fighting and spiritual arts is superb.
