West Maui Taxpayers Association – Candidates Night

West Maui Taxpayers Association Candidates Night
Friday Oct. 24, 2014 at the Lahaina Civic Center

West Maui Tax Payers Association

It is an honor and privilege for the West Maui Taxpayers Association (WMTA) to invite you to participate in the WMTA 2014 Candidates Night. The 2014 WMTA Candidates Night is on Friday, October 24, 2014, at the Lahaina Civic Center beginning at 5:00 PM with Registration & dinner service by local businesses and restaurants.

West Maui is a unique and vibrant community that provides employment opportunities and generates significant tax revenues for all levels of government. WMTA is also unique in that our mission is to promote efficient use of the taxes generated locally to invest in the infrastructure, services and amenities that help ensure that West Maui remains one of the best places to live, work and visit in the world.

The WMTA Candidates Night is the only forum of its kind in West Maui, and WMTA has been providing this forum for over 30 years. The tradition for the WMTA Candidates Night is to invite all Federal, State and County candidates appearing on the West Maui ballot to give West Maui voters an opportunity see the candidates up close and personal, while building awareness of West Maui issues. For those offices with both candidates attending, there will be an opportunity for each candidate to give an introductory statement followed by a question or two presented in a debate format. If only one candidate is present, or the office is not contested, the candidate will have an opportunity to introduce themselves to the voters with a short statement. This event will be broadcast live on Akaku Community TV, and recorded for re-broadcast as well.

As the WMTA Candidates Night is for West Maui voter education, we ask that any candidate attending please refrain from bringing a large contingent of supporters. No signs, banners or other campaign materials will be allowed inside the Civic Center, and all election activities must be conducted outside. Anyone displaying disruptive or disrespectful behavior will be asked to leave.

Maui resident Dave Peterson was attacked by an 8′-10′ shark while paddling his stand up board at Kanaha Beach. All North Shore Beaches were temporarily closed due to this incident. Stay tuned for more information!
On October 18, 2012 Maui Surfer and Board Shaper. Dave Peterson was on his stand up paddle in waters 300 yards off Kanaha Point in Kahului. Peterson was standing on his board and a shark swam up and knocked him off into the water, landing on the shark’s back. The shark then grabbed ahold of Peterson’s surfboard, digging it’s teeth into the board with aggression. Peterson then grabbed his paddle and began hitting the shark with it. The shark broke free from the board and swam toward Peterson. Pushing the shark away with his hands, Peterson then climbed back onto his board and the shark swam away. Teeth marks were left on the board, showing just how lucky Peterson was to get away without any injuries.

Maui Time provides insightful analysis and in depth reporting. We believe some issues are so important they require thoughtful consideration. We are not a “paper of record”—a daily journal of government meetings, ribbon-cuttings and corporate announcements. We decide what’s interesting and newsworthy and then do whatever investigation is necessary to get the story. We do not wait for official press releases to appear at the office before deciding what constitutes “news.”

We feel that even important stories need to be interesting and easy to read. All the work our reporters did will go to waste if no one reads them. For that reason we don’t write “inverted pyramid” stories where as much information as possible is jammed into the first, dry paragraphs. Indeed, even the Associated Press is now moving away from that, offering customers optional narrative leads for its important stories.

We write our features, essays and stories using all the color, dialogue and structure usually reserved for novelists. When possible, we also try to break away from traditional formats by incorporating interviews, quizzes and lists. We take our time when preparing stories so the writing crackles on the page. We want to intrigue, entrance and sometimes even infuriate our readers.

That means we’re often satirical, opinionated and sarcastic. Our voice is anything other than the bland omniscience that comes from daily newspapers. We don’t pretend to have all the answers, and we believe our readers are sophisticated enough to understand that.

We’re human beings just like our readers, with loves and hates, and we’re always honest about our biases. But we also look at our subjects fairly and honestly. There are more than two sides to every story, but when we feel something is right or wrong, we will not hesitate to say so.
