Upcountry Farmers Market – Kulamalu Town Center, Maui Hawaii

Upcountry Farmers Market Maui Hawaii

The best food is what’s grown local to you! Come celebrate fresh, locally grown food and community at our NEW Upcountry Farmer’s Market located at the Kulamalu Town Center Hwy. 37 near Long’s Drugs, Pukalani/Kula. We are behind the football field on Saturdays, 7am – 12pm.

The Upcountry Farmers Market has been operating on Maui first at St. Joseph’s Church over 30yrs ago. The Upcountry Farmers Market moved after a few years to the Eddie Tam Gymnasium in Makawao town and existed there for approximately the last 30yrs. Value added food products were a vital part of the market. Unfortunately there was an incident of food poisoning and the market was shut down. It re-opened with restrictions, rules and regulations. The market vendors dwindled to only a few maybe 3 regulars and 2 or 3 occasional and with even fewer customers. This was about 7 years ago when the acting manager was leaving and told me that I was the new manager by default. I did not know what responsibilities came with that but soon found out.

Upcountry Farmers Market Maui HawaiiIn order for the market to continue I had to comply with many requests by the County of Maui in order to keep it running. The County of Maui has graciously allowed and supported the market through our ever expanding evolution over the years and assisted all of us with a mutually beneficial solution to our outgrowing the market location with a whopping 60 vendors. Yes we will be allowed value added goods again. The value added goods will have to come from the farmer and use the produce from ones farm on Maui. As of the 26th of June 2010 we have been freely given 100 spaces in Kulamalu Town Center by Everette Dowling, and the Dowling Company. There has been a tremendous amount of work that has gone into this and many thanks are due to so many.

We wish to thank Mayor Tavares, The County of Maui Parks and Recreation Dept., Everette Dowling and staff, Council woman Gladys Baisa, Clark Hashimoto, Rep. Kyle Yamshita, The County Planning Dept., Island Signs and countless others who have donated their time to make this a great community event.

Market Hours:
Saturdays 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Come early for the best picking!

Upcountry Farmers Market Maui Hawaii

Alii Chang – Farmer and Visionary – Maui Hawaii

In loving memory of Alii Chang, Farmer & Visionary.
February 19, 1942 – April 13, 2011

“My passion has always been in the earth,” says Alii Chang, who planted a lavender farm in upcountry Maui and made it into a work of art.

Alii Chang, Farmer & Visionary

Local Maui farmer and visionary, Alii Arlington Chang, known best for his successful Alii Kula Lavender farm on the slopes of Haleakala, passed peacefully in his sleep April 13, 2011.

Alii’s vision for the lavender farm was to create a venue for “Sustainable Aloha.” This included educational stewardship projects with the community. In honor of that respect and vision, the Ali‘i Chang Foundation has been established to provide scholarships pursuing skills training in agriculture and for agricultural education in our local schools. Scholarship recipients should embody the very qualities Ali‘i possessed including a strong work ethic, as well as innate and natural skills in growing plants, flowers, trees and food crops.
Applicants should also have an eye for design, a commitment to aloha, hospitality and “aloha āina” or “love for the land.” More information will be provided as the foundation is developed.
