Wailea Old Blue Golf Club – Maui Hawaii 808-879-2530

Dominating Maui’s skyline is the majestic 10,023-foot dormant volcano, Mt. Haleakala. Meandering across her lower foothills are the pristine fairways of the Wailea Old Blue Course. Stretching 6,765 yards from its tips, this classic Arthur Jack Snyder beauty has charmed her way into the heart of many a Wailea golfer. With cooling fountains, serene lakes, exotic blossoms and coral sand bunkers, the Old Blue is a true Hawaiian resort course.
Her immaculate fairways are woven through the resort, offering a picturesque “tour” of Wailea, with spectacular views of the azure ocean and dramatic volcanic slopes. Her graceful design and generous fairways offer a pleasing repast for “weekend” golfers, but elevation changes and strategically placed hazards have tested some of the best professional players. On the Wailea Old Blue Course ocean vistas are to be found at every hole. In fact, years back when the LPGA Women’s Kemper Open was played here, tournament officials had to admonish some of the competitors for slow play. Turns out the pros were dallying at the 12th hole to do a little whale watching.

The Challenge at Manele – Island of Lanai Golf

High above the crashing surf of Hulopo’e Bay, The Challenge at Manele is an outstanding course that more than lives up to its name. Built on lava outcroppings, the course features three holes on cliffs, which use the Pacific Ocean as a water hazard. The five-tee concept challenges the best golfers – tee shots over natural gorges and ravines must be precise.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this dramatic, unspoiled natural terrain is a stunning backdrop, and every hole offers majestic ocean views. The winter months bring spectacular sightings of whales right from the fairways.

The golf course is open every day from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The Challenge at Manele

The Experience at Koele – Island of Lanai Golf

Designed by golf legend Greg Norman and architect Ted Robinson, this championship course offers stunning views of mountains and lush greens, with the ocean in the distance. It offers dramatic contrast to The Challenge at Manele, with a cooler climate, wooded slopes, manicured bunkers and terraced water hazards.

The course begins on a plateau nearly 2,000 feet (610 metres) above sea level, with sweeping views of Maui and Moloka’i across the ocean channel. The signature hole, Number 17, plays from a 250-foot (76-metre) elevated tee to a fairway bordered by a lake on one side and dense foliage the other. The front nine moves dramatically through ravines wooded with pine, koa and eucalyptus trees, and seven lakes and flowing streams with cascading waterfalls dot the entire course. No other course offers a more incredible combination of highland terrain, inspired landscape architecture and range of play challenges. Playing a round here will ensure you bragging rights, no matter what your score.

The golf course is open Wednesday through Sunday from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm

The King Kamehameha Golf Club – 2011 Michael H. Lyons Palaka Award

The Rotary Club of Kahului recently held a fundraising event benefiting the Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Scholarship Fund and the prestigious 2011 Mike Lyons Palaka Award ceremony and luncheon at The King Kamehameha Golf Club in Waikapu.

The 2011 recipient of the Palaka Award was Helen Nielsen of the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust; Rob Shelton of the Lahainaluna High School Foundation.

The Mike Lyons Palaka Award, created to honor Lyons’ commitment to community, is presented for outstanding long-term service to a leader of one of Maui’s nonprofit organization.

“The Palaka Award is the ultimate accolade,” said Leslie Mullens, Rotary Club of Kahului president. “It acknowledges consistent and meaningful hands-on philanthropy while honoring Mike Lyons’ legacy as one of Maui’s most inspiring leaders.”

Throughout his career, Lyons served on the boards of numerous community groups and was instrumental in founding several nonprofit organizations on the island. Among his many roles, he served as founder and chairman of the Maui Economic Development Board; governor of District 5000 (Hawai’i) Rotary International; president of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, Kahului Rotary Club and the J. Walter Cameron Center; chairman of Maui United Way; and treasurer and board member of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

“Lyons was the epitome of a Rotarian and a prominent, tireless Maui figure,” added Mullens.

Lyons passed away on March 26, 2004, leaving a legacy that continues to impact and inspire to this day. The award is named for his signature palaka shirts.

The innovative golf ball drop fundraiser was held just prior to the luncheon. Participants were asked to make a cash donation to acquire one or more numbered golf balls, which were then dropped from a helicopter 250 feet above a target on the King Kamehameha Golf Club driving range. Balls landing closest to the target were awarded prizes, including a Napa Valley Getaway and a Grand Wailea Hotel Staycation package.

Net proceeds from the golf ball drop directly fund Rotary Club of Kahului’s Michael H. Lyons II Scholarship program, which provides college scholarships for exceptional Maui youth.

2011 Champions Skins Game – Kaanapali Golf Courses, Maui

The Champions Skins Game returns to the Royal Ka’anapali Golf Course, Saturday. Jan 29 – Sunday Jan 30, 2011.

HawaiiOnTV.com will be brining you Exclusive footage from the 2011 Champions Skins Game at the Royal Ka’anapali Golf Course!

Two of the greatest performers in sports (Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson) will defend their title against fellow Hall of Fame members and major championship winners as the 24th Ka’anapali Champions Skins Game returns to the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii and the Royal Ka’anapali Golf Course Jan. 29-30, 2011

In the Ka’anapali Champions Skins Game format, each hole becomes a tournament within itself and the prize money is carried over if no team wins the hole outright. The $770,000 purse is distributed to $30,000 for each of the first six holes, $40,000 for each of the middle six holes, $50,000 each for holes 13 through 17, and $100,000 for the 18 th hole.

The players will donate 10 percent of their earnings to a charity of their choice.

Here is a snapshot of the four teams:

Jack Nicklaus – Tom Watson: These two legends and Hall of Fame members have entertained and amazed sports fans for decades. Still considered the greatest to play the game, Nicklaus started his professional career by winning the 1962 U.S. Open for the first of an unmatched 18 major championship titles. Watson excited the sports world in 2009 as he led the British Open late into Sunday before losing a playoff to Stewart Cink. It would have been Watson’s sixth Open title. Together this twosome has won 134 official events on both the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour.

Ben Crenshaw – Fuzzy Zoeller: While Zoeller has won two consecutive competitions as an individual teaming with Peter Jacobsen in 2008 and Crenshaw in 2009 as a duo they nearly became the first team to win back-to-back titles a year ago. The twosome earned three skins on the final day and finished second. Hall of Fame member Crenshaw has accumulated 19 PGA TOUR victories, including the 1984 and 1995 Masters. Zoeller won the 1979 Masters, the 1984 U.S. Open and the 2002 Senior PGA Championship during a career that has included 12 victories.

Fred Couples – Nick Price: Last year marked the debut for both of these players in the Ka’anapali Champions Skins Game. They will also be the youngest team in the competition. Following his Champions Tour debut at this event last year, Couples went on to win three consecutive Champions Tour titles, finished second in season-ending honors to Langer and was named Rookie of the Year. Couples owns15 career titles on the PGA TOUR and has won the Tour’s version of the Skins seven times. Price, an 18 time winner on TOUR, made a four-foot birdie putt in a playoff last year to help this team win two skins and finish third.

Bernhard Langer – Mark O’Meara: This team is in place for the first time. Langer, a two-time Masters champion, has enjoyed another magnificent year by winning nearly all the Champions Tour major awards, including the Charles Schwab Cup (point’s leader), the Jack Nicklaus Trophy (Player of the Year) and the Arnold Palmer Award (leading money-winner). He also became the first Champions Tour players in history to win the Jack Nicklaus Trophy and the Arnold Palmer Award three consecutive years. O’Meara, also a multiple major championship winner, earned his first two Champions Tour titles this year. He won 16 titles on the PGA TOUR.
