Welcome to Monstera…a hip, casual, moderately priced restaurant providing great food, service, ambiance and value.

Monstera, is located in The Shops at Mauna Lani, and offers so much more than a typical sushi restaurant. We have added menu items of Noodle Houses and Izakayas (Japanese Pubs of Japan) to offer you a selection of dishes never seen before on the Big Island.

Our philosophy is smile in, smile out. We want people to feel welcome with our gracious local-style hospitality and enjoy our great food at a great price in this beautiful location. We hope this will be a stopping point for residents while traveling along the coast or after visiting a nearby beach.

Named after a non-native, mysterious plant found in Hawaii, Monstera offers a wide selection of moderately priced food, sizzling platters and drinks in a casual, yet hip, atmosphere. Here, guests can sit in crocodile print booths under soft lighting and listen to familiar tunes or dine alfresco.

Monstera is owned and operated by Waikoloa residents Norio Yamamoto and Wes Monty. Chef Yamamoto is a master sushi chef who trained in Tokyo. Dining Review by Fern Gavelek

Step inside this Kihei restaurant to take a trip to the wonderful flavors of Thailand. Enjoy Thai music and decor while choosing from more than 100 menu items – all expertly and beautifully prepared.

The menu explains the ingredients of each item and often the cooking technique used. There are numerous appetizers, salads, soups, curries, plus noodle and rice dishes. Entrees are plentiful and many are available with your choice of shrimp, chicken, beef or pork. Expect the exotic and the opportunity to try delicious new things.

Chef Kong Lavongtheung says Pad Thai is one of the most popular entrees. A sweet, slightly tangy dish of thin, rice noodles stir fried with eggs, bean sprouts and onions, Pad Thai melts in your mouth. I had it with shrimp – six pieces. Served with fresh lettuce, bean sprouts, carrots and lime as a sort of side salad, Pad Thai is an ample meal. The light rice noodles are a nice change from the usual pasta.
Hints of fresh mint, lime and cilantro bring a zest to the spectacular Yum Nuer Beef Salad. A work of art – onions, lemon grass, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, celery and lettuce are topped with grilled sliced beef and a to-die-for lemon dressing. I strongly recommend it.

If you love peanuts, the Satay appetizer is for you. Served on bamboo skewers is your choice of marinated and grilled chicken, beef or shrimp. It comes with a bowl of sliced cucumbers and creamy satay (peanut) sauce for dipping. And dipping you must do to get that wonderful peanuty taste.

Menu items – and prices – are the same for lunch and dinner at Thailand Cuisine. You decide now “hot” you want your food – simply tell the waiter “mild, medium or hot.” Wine is available by the glass or bottle, There’s also imported beer, including Singha from Thailand. A must is the sweet Thai Iced Tea served with plenty of cream.
