Wailea Old Blue Golf Club – Maui Hawaii 808-879-2530

Wailea Old Blue Golf Club – Maui Hawaii 808-879-2530

Dominating Maui’s skyline is the majestic 10,023-foot dormant volcano, Mt. Haleakala. Meandering across her lower foothills are the pristine fairways of the Wailea Old Blue Course. Stretching 6,765 yards from its tips, this classic Arthur Jack Snyder beauty has charmed her way into the heart of many a Wailea golfer. With cooling fountains, serene lakes, exotic blossoms and coral sand bunkers, the Old Blue is a true Hawaiian resort course.
Her immaculate fairways are woven through the resort, offering a picturesque “tour” of Wailea, with spectacular views of the azure ocean and dramatic volcanic slopes. Her graceful design and generous fairways offer a pleasing repast for “weekend” golfers, but elevation changes and strategically placed hazards have tested some of the best professional players. On the Wailea Old Blue Course ocean vistas are to be found at every hole. In fact, years back when the LPGA Women’s Kemper Open was played here, tournament officials had to admonish some of the competitors for slow play. Turns out the pros were dallying at the 12th hole to do a little whale watching.

The following information is provided by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association:

2012 Girls’ Junior America’s Cup – Wailea Golf Club, Maui

Kihei, Hawaii, July 16, 2012 – Team Hawaii is gearing up for a very special week on Maui at the beautiful and challenging Wailea Golf Club- Gold Course. The Hawaii Team is led by Captain Cathy Torchiana, LPGA, from Kihei, who retired from college coaching after twelve years at USC and being inducted into the National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Cathy will be leading a very talented and very young Hawaii Team, Eimi Koga (Honolulu), Mariel Galdiano (Honolulu), Rose Huang (Honolulu), Ciera Min (Hilo).

Hawaii hosts this prestigious tournament only once every 18 years for the girls and once every 17 years for the boys. The tournament is filled with long standing traditions and ceremony. These traditions embrace the GJAC Philosophy:

Bring together girls from various states and countries
Cultivate new friendships and mutual respect
Promote a better understanding of our regional history and customs
Allow girls to learn about different cultures
Develop pride in self, team, state and country

Hawaii and the HSJGA are anxious to show our mainland and international visitors the real meaning of aloha as the week begins Sunday, July 22 with a “Meet & Greet” at Hotel Wailea. The evening will be filled with good local food, a lei making demonstration, Snag Golf contests and the traditional gift exchange as the teams meet each other and their host families for the week. As the sun sets over the Pacific, the invited guests will enjoy a beautiful and powerful fire dance!

“This event would not be possible without the amazing donations from companies and individuals alike from all around the state and especially the amazing generosity of all the Wailea Host families, who are opening their homes to these young ladies for the week. I know for sure we could not have pulled this off without the Aloha Section PGA and the Wailea Golf Club who are always there for junior golf!” says Mary Bea Porter-King, HSJGA President. Other major sponsors include Pard & Betsy Erdman, Gannon’s A Pacific View Restaurant, HawaiiOnTV, Hotel Wailea, King Auto Group, Liliha Bakery, Marriott Wailea, MC&A and Tihati.

The public is welcome to enjoy some great golf at the Wailea Golf Club Monday through Thursday. On Monday, July 23, the practice round is followed by what will prove to be a memorable Opening Ceremony at 2:45 near the putting green, come early for a good seat! Kimokeo Kapahulehua will give a traditional Hawaiian blessing followed by the Royal Hawaiian Guard raising of the three country flags (Mexico, Canada & USA). The raising of the GJAC flag indicates the start of the tournament. The public is welcomed to attend the Opening Ceremony and watch the next generation of great young golfers at Wailea GC, free of charge!

Tournament rounds are Tuesday, July 24 through Thursday, July 26. The tournament is opened to spectators, support the Hawaii team or your favorite team from your home state or country!

The Challenge at Manele – Island of Lanai Golf

High above the crashing surf of Hulopo’e Bay, The Challenge at Manele is an outstanding course that more than lives up to its name. Built on lava outcroppings, the course features three holes on cliffs, which use the Pacific Ocean as a water hazard. The five-tee concept challenges the best golfers – tee shots over natural gorges and ravines must be precise.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this dramatic, unspoiled natural terrain is a stunning backdrop, and every hole offers majestic ocean views. The winter months bring spectacular sightings of whales right from the fairways.

The golf course is open every day from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The Challenge at Manele

The Experience at Koele – Island of Lanai Golf

Designed by golf legend Greg Norman and architect Ted Robinson, this championship course offers stunning views of mountains and lush greens, with the ocean in the distance. It offers dramatic contrast to The Challenge at Manele, with a cooler climate, wooded slopes, manicured bunkers and terraced water hazards.

The course begins on a plateau nearly 2,000 feet (610 metres) above sea level, with sweeping views of Maui and Moloka’i across the ocean channel. The signature hole, Number 17, plays from a 250-foot (76-metre) elevated tee to a fairway bordered by a lake on one side and dense foliage the other. The front nine moves dramatically through ravines wooded with pine, koa and eucalyptus trees, and seven lakes and flowing streams with cascading waterfalls dot the entire course. No other course offers a more incredible combination of highland terrain, inspired landscape architecture and range of play challenges. Playing a round here will ensure you bragging rights, no matter what your score.

The golf course is open Wednesday through Sunday from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm
