THE RITZ-CARLTON, KAPALUA PRESENTS THE 19TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS FESTIVAL
April 22 & 23, 2011
“E na aumakua” … A Call To All Things Natural
The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua celebrated the 19th Annual “Celebration of The Arts” with Hawaii’s most reputable artisans, educators, cultural practitioners, speakers and entertainers. The celebration took place April 22nd & 23rd, 2011, continuing the tradition of recognizing the people, the arts and the culture of Hawaii. “E na aumakua was this year’s focus, which embraces calling out to our ancestors and all things natural” states Clifford Nae‘ole, Cultural Advisor and Event Chair of the prestigious event.
Opening ceremonies included traditional Hawaiian oli (chants) from Hawaiian practitioners while music and hula was continuous throughout the weekend. Hands-on art, demonstrations, films, cultural panels, music and dance acted as the common ground to allow visitors and residents the opportunity to interact and enjoy the “Number 1 rated cultural event” according Hawaii Modern Luxury magazine. The Celebration of the Arts has also been the recipient of the coveted “Keep it Hawaii Kahili Award” presented by the Hawaii Tourism Association.
An exciting addition was The George Kanahele Mele Ho’okuku (song competition) on Saturday, April 23rd. A proud native of the islands, Dr. George Kanehele was committed to ensuring that Hawaiian values remain an integral part of the hospitality industry in the Aloha state and hence, this special challenge is only open to individuals within the industry — but everyone was welcome to share the experience. One designated Hawaiian song was sung by all groups, followed by a “song of choice.” Judging criteria was based upon tone, harmony, stage presence and the use and pronunciation of Hawaiian language.
The Celebration Lu’au and Show ended the weekend festivities bringing together the foods of traditional Hawaii and the contemporary cuisine of The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua chefs. “The Celebration Lu’au and Show was amazing and would truly rank as one of the best lu’aus in the State of Hawaii said Executive Chef John Zaner.” “The food and entertainment was top notch making for an unforgettable evening” he added.
The Celebration After-Hours Party was the finale and is held in the Hotel Lobby Alaloa Lounge with no cover charge. The finest talent in Hawaii took the stage with impromptu performances in a fun filled jam-session that reflected upon the spirit of aloha that the islands are known for. The Celebration Easter Brunch took place on Sunday, April 24, with the annual Easter Egg Scramble and incredible food for everyone who attended.
