During the 2012 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz’s competition and gala at the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater, Jazz Alley TV & captured an unexpected performer who sat in on the drums!!

Filmmaker and Emmy winner Ken Martinez Burgmaier was on location in Washington, D.C. with his Maui-based Jazz Alley TV & film crews for a new film project and national TV special at the Smithsonian Institute and Kennedy Center for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.
The special, a tribute to former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, featured appearances by and interviews with Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, 20-time Grammy winner and Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, actor Billy Dee Williams, Academy and Grammy legend Herbie Hancock, and blues legend Joe Louis Walker.
